The Secret Practice of Kumbhaka, a DZG Talk by Fabian Sanders.
In this talk we will look at the background and the context of this important tantric practice both in India and in Tibet. We will also explain the traditional presentations of its physiology and the reasons why it is considered to be a very secret practice
Kumbhaka is breath retention — the practice of deliberately suspending the breath — considered one of the most potent and closely guarded techniques in both Indian and Tibetan tantric traditions.
It sits at the heart of pranayama (breathwork) and, in its more advanced tantric forms, is considered a powerful tool for moving and concentrating subtle energy (prana) in the body.
Fabian Sanders has studied Asian languages, traditions, and cultures extensively. For more than two decades he has concentrated on teaching classical Tibetan Language at university level and for the Shang Shung Foundation/Atiyoga Foundation. He has been a student of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu for nearly thirty years. He is author of La Lingua Tibetana Classica (Hoepli), the first classical Tibetan grammar book in Italian.
He is the director of the School for Tibetan Language and Translation of the International Atiyoga Foundation and Academic Director of the Shang Shung Institute UK.
